Cooking

Cooking is making food by mixing and heating ingredients. It can be as simple as making sandwiches, or as complex as creating gourmet meals, which involve methods like baking, grilling, frying, and boiling. Some benefits of cooking include healthier eating, skill development, mental health improvements, social connection and more.

Considerations for neurodivergent individuals : Cooking can be a wonderful activity for neurodiverse individuals! It can provide a sensory-rich experience and opportunities for creativity. Many find joy in following recipes, experimenting with flavors, and enjoying the process of preparing food. Depending on individual preferences and needs, some might appreciate structured tasks like measuring ingredients, while others might enjoy the sensory input from handling different textures and ingredients. Overall, cooking can be both a therapeutic and rewarding activity for neurodiverse individuals, allowing them to express themselves and develop useful life skills.

Verbal accommodations : Origami can cater to both verbal and nonverbal individuals. While making masterpieces, you can talk to others around you or silently fold.

Visual accommodations : Origami is typically associated with bright and bold colored paper. However, if colored paper is too overwhelming, one can always use neutral colored paper.

Hiking

Hiking involves walking outdoors, typically on trails or in natural environments like forests or mountains. Hiking is often appreciated for its scenic views and opportunities to connect with nature. Some benefits of hiking include physical fitness, mental well being, connection to nature, social interaction, exploration, and many more. Hiking can be a solo activity, as well as with others for companionship and bonding.

Considerations for Nuerodiverse Individuals : When neurodiverse individuals go hiking, whether by themselves or with others, there are several considerations to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and supportive experience.

Sensory Needs : It is important to pay attention to sensory activities, such as noise, light, or texture. Objects to help manage these are noise-canceling headphones and sunglasses.

Routine and Structure : Having a clear plan and itinerary can help reduce anxiety. Understanding the trail route, and estimated time can help provide a sense of security.

Comfort Items : Bringing familiar objects or fidget toys can offer comfort and help manage anxiety.

Gardening

Gardening is an outdoor activity that involves tending and cultivating a variety of plants. Depending on one’s taste, gardens can include herbs plants, fruit trees, vegetable plants, or even beautiful flowers. It can be a meditating process that requires a lot of dedication to keep a thriving garden.

Sensory Needs : Since gardening is an outdoor activity, weather can always affect one’s gardening experience. Always check the weather to see if it is sunny or rainy. The best conditions to garden are sunny days to avoid downpour.

Light sensitivity : If the sun is too bright, try wearing hats to block the sun rays from one’s view.
